Teenagers & Breakfast

2009 December 17

Pretty simple… teenagers are not eating breakfast. Cereal is not breakfast. Presently, companies claim that their cereals are heart healthy, packed with vitamins and minerals that are essential in a morning breakfast.  Since when did cereal become breakfast?  Since when did cereal become even a food? The United States is a fast moving society where time is limited. That is the excuse I hear from teenagers, “I have no time!” So, they resort to cereal, another low quality food source or not eating at all. Some go 5 plus hours without putting one thing into their mouths! This is crazy! It’s absolutely essential to eat a nutrient dense breakfast. A high quality breakfast brings energy for the days activities. It starts up your metabloism which equals increased energy and fat loss. It allows you to focus, problem slove and gives you the proper nutrients to become a better athlete!

Get up 15 minutes early and cook eggs! If you don’t like eggs and you have to resort to a carb source, have Old Fashion Oatmeal. Add milk and nuts for added protein. Having one cup of Oatmeal, 6oz of whole milk and half a serving of nuts is 30grams of carbohydrates; 20grams of protein; and 9 grams of fat. PROTEIN and FAT are good for you and this is a good option in the morning, though I would like to see you eat more protein than carbohydrates. I will let it slide this time.
